The coffee table, which is made up of old factory floor boards, is burnished brass hardware. Reclaimed material has been used in built-in window seating which is crowned with soft leather cushions. The design is pinned by a handwoven wall tapestry.
This style is not only wonderful, but also long lasting. Personally, I always advise to use reclaimed products not necessarily because they will be beautiful, but because it will be conscientious. As Architectural Digest remarks, the past cannot patina like nothing, so this place is an illumining example.
Some vintage glass accessories would contrast with the wood with which to decorate it (or an old chandelier to bring the ceiling into the narrative).
Colorful Cushions That Catch the Light
At other times, a neutral background gets animated with color as this sunroom does. I began with a modest beige sofa and through a kaleidoscope of colorful, patterned cushions I transformed the light into a living picture. Every sun ray changes the location according to the cushion they fall.
Its main sofa consists of sand-toned linen with the skirted bottom. It has velvet mustard, teal, rose and burnt orange cushions on it. Kilims are embroidered and cotton throws are striped to bring in a cultural flair. The energy is kept light using a glass-topped rattan coffee table. Side stools are painted in the corners and act as a mini display of books and mugs of coffee.
Some of my clients have remarked that such rooms are a good place because they are happy-looking. According to House & Home, “color is sunlight’s best friend,” especially when layered intentionally. Each cushion is an opportunity to have personality, notably where the sun is, and hours tint colors.
I would add some form of gallery wall, in case it was a gallery wall with the same color themes, or simply a rug that runs on the same palette as the cushions.
Ceiling Fans and Breezy Afternoons
There is no greater definition of lazy luxury than a sun room with a silent ceiling fan and sunlight flickering over the furniture. This design is aerodynamics and improved looks-wise. In a big sun room with the cross wind ventilation, I decided to have a huge, contemporary, matte black ceiling fan, which suits the free-flow design of the room.
It is a small room with a bamboo framed sofa, light gray cushions and a slotted pine coffee table. The fan above is woodgrained and the blades are adjustable in speed. Damask linen blinds are set at minimalistic black stands. There are coolers rackets, extra throws and lemonade in a built-in corner nook.
I usually tell the clients that they should not only buy ceiling fans that are functional, but more so those that are stylish. According to the recommendation of the Southern Living, fan is the jewelry of the ceiling. It binds everything in this sunroom and makes it comfortable even in summer.
In order to complete the size of the space, I would propose to decorate it with a hanging chair close to the corner windows maybe a rug as well to create the comfort of the seating area and cushion the steps.
Corner Plants in Sun-Drenched Serenity
Creating a job cosy sunroom will imply taking advantage of natural light and among the best to improve the aura is creating a corner plant and having colourful corners of plants. Several tall and cascading plantings around big windows are my usual suggestions in order to soften architectural detail and achieve the lush and greenhouse environment. They not only absorb the sunlight but also contribute to controlling the temperature and clearing the air which evokes the feeling of it being more alive in the room. According to Nate Berkus, as he has posted in Architectural Digest, plants provide depth and peace to any room particularly where light is a leading character. I have experienced this myself when customers find a new use of their sunrooms simply due to a well planned plant renovation.
The addition in elevating of this design would be to include a small fountain inside to provide ambient sound or maybe include inbuilt corner bench along with scraggly planting pots, to create unified style of designing. A soft linen curtain could also filter stronger afternoon rays without dimming the room’s natural glow.
Sunroom Fireplaces and Cozy Contrasts
The idea of putting a fireplace in a sunroom might sound contradictory, but it is a magnificent idea of combining the fire and light. I have a favorite idea to build an electric or vent-free gas fireplace on one of the walls-opposite of the largest window. Not only does this provide functional heat but it also provides a contrast element to an otherwise cool to airy color scheme. It is ideal combination of sunny mornings and warm evenings.
I like low-profile modern fireboxes in black and brushed brass and either a low-key stone surround, or a white shiplap backdrop. Next, I place two upholstered chairs, which are armless, in a cream or a dusty sage color in front of each other with a live-edge coffee table separating them. Add a fluffy alpaca throw and some patterned cushions and even in the morning, the room can become a nook to pass the time reading, yet a cozy yet elegant night retreat.
There was a client who was reluctant at first when trying to put a fireplace in their all-glass sunroom in Vermont. After it was put in place, it became their winter favorite hangout in the house. When working in the interior of your home, it is always a good idea to add some focal point, as Better Homes & Gardens has even recently made a recommendation, stating that such elements as a fireplace can help to increase the usability of a room in all seasons as a bright room is to become a four-season retreat.
If I could add one more element here, it would be recessed shelving beside the fireplace for logs (even if decorative) or storage. Sconces mounted on a wall would also add the level of ambiance but would not bloat the source of light that windows provide.
Light-Filtered Curtains for Soft Shade
Curtains in a sunroom aren’t just decorative—they’re a design decision that balances beauty and practicality. I have discovered that the secret to tone down the harshness of having full e-sun throughout the day light and at the same time maintain the gentle warm feeling which makes these rooms enchanted is light-filtered curtains. My favorite picks replace the floor-to-ceiling sheer drapes of off-white or cream or skin-toned blush color, particularly in a vaulted or a wrap around window type of room.
When I hang the curtain rod I prefer to hang it a bit down the ceiling so as to make this room profile longer. On the furniture front, I settle back and go sleek: a linen tufted sofa, an oak coffee table with matte finishes and a couple of minimal side chairs in cotton twill. Piled textures, a jute rug, ceramic vases, and a knitted throw take care of the feeling of, relaxed elegance.
In my opinion, the aesthetics of the filtered curtains is in the power that they lend to the room in time. It is also a fact that professional designing experts such as Emily Henderson promote the use of the combination of curtains and bamboo shades to create an extra layer and functional character. This approach would facilitate the control of light but not at the expense of design.
The only refinement I would add on this is the inclusion of curtain tiebacks or the discreet tracks that further simplify the management of the drapery at especially inconvenient moments like when the day takes on a high level of sun exposure and vice versa. You may also use curtain made of woven linen or lightly embroidered ones.
Serene Sunsets in Golden Hour Sanctuaries
The thing is, there is something magical, about a sunroom during Golden Hour, when the whole room is covered in the amber-rose color scheme. there is no sunset I would not place those west windows to get all of it. Now is the moment to feel tempted to curl up in either a comfortable chaise lounge or in a deep armchair, and read a book in the company of a cup of tea.
My preference is on furniture that would be honey oak or warm walnut and cloths that are in the range of ochre, clay and mellow corals. The statement floor lamp using a dome shade, a mirror with the brass trim to reflect lights, and weaved wall baskets all make the mood to be mellow. Throw in there a patterned kilim rug and you will have a room that will shine inside out.
My sunroom is my favorite time of day, usually, at Golden hour. I have observed when individuals can relax quicker in areas where light is deliberate and supported. “A series of rooms with the evening light is what can bring relaxation and warmth as done by interior expert Shea McGee notes.” I can heartily concur with this–sunsets are first-class medicine.
The only adjustment that I would introduce in this setting would be smart lighting that dims during the evening to correspond to the change of natural lighting. Thus, turning the room into golden mood, even after sunset. A modest wine cart or a sideboard where the tea can be offered would be a nice and efficient addition.
