I tend to start with a big neutral foundation such as a wool flatweave or jute rug, and then I add a patterned or plush rug on top. In bedrooms, a round rug on top of a rectangular one may create an effect of softness. Asymmetrical layering in living rooms with Moroccan shag or a geometric cotton rug provides a lived-in look.
Clients are always surprised by the extent of difference it makes. Domino recently said it was a must in sensory layering and I couldn’t agree more. It is also a cheap method of changing your appearance without having to change the whole floor covering.
I would also suggest playing around with color as well- have no fear of combining natural beige with cobalt blue or toned down clay. What I would add? Maybe a snap together modular rug system that fits various layouts.
Geometric Patterns With Organic Flow
Geometric patterns have never been out of design, however, 2025 makes them softer, with organic flow incorporated into their design. I adore this combination of accuracy and inaccuracy. Rather than strict lines and strict symmetry we can observe wavy forms, off-set grids and naturalistic forms with meandering lines.
I have also used this type of pattern style in wallpaper, area rugs, or upholstered furniture when I am designing. Think of a sofa with soft curved seams, or a rug with curving and layered lines. These patterns welcome a more natural rhythm in the space, the eye moves in a relaxing manner.
My personal dining room has wallpaper with asymmetrical geometric waves in subdued colors and it makes the room feel dynamic yet not chaotic. Magazines such as Elle Decor celebrate this trend as a means of creating a balance between structure and serenity, something I have found to be appealing to clients in search of balance.
To enhance the concept, I would recommend adding 3D wall panels that have a sculptural flow, shapes that will interact with the light and the shadows during the day, creating a better mood and movement.
Transparent Decor: Glass And Acrylic Resurgence
In 2025, the revival of the use of transparent materials like glass and acrylic is transforming the design process of spaces. I am noticing more interiors in which these elements have been used not only as accents, but as major design elements. Glass furniture and dividers enable the free passage of light, which makes rooms more open and provides a relaxed atmosphere. This trend goes hand in hand with open floor plans and neutral palettes and is therefore ideal in modern and urban homes where space is usually a premium.
An acrylic coffee table and a curved glass dining table are one of my favorite design sets. I would also suggest clear shelving units which appear to be integrated into the walls to aid in keeping a clutter free look. Lucite framed chairs and clear side tables are ideal to bring a futuristic but classy touch. These are functional, fashionable and incredibly simple to match with austere and ornamental decor.
I have found this trend to be especially useful in the home office and living room. Indeed, Elle Decor has recently noted that glass furniture is a perfect solution to smaller apartments, since it can give the illusion of a bigger apartment. I concur- clever application of transparency can utterly transform the visual dynamics of a room. Simply do not use too many transparent pieces in one area, and you will lose warmth.
The only thing I would add to this trend would be to include some colored glass elements, such as soft-tinted pendant lights or a pale blue acrylic desk, so that the personality comes out without overwhelming the openness of the room.
Japandi 2.0: Calm, Clean, And Cozy
The combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese minimalism, or Japandi, is becoming what designers are terming Japandi 2.0. I think this newer version is even more sophisticated and emotionally reassuring. Japandi 2.0 focuses on wellness in space with organic textures, earth tones, and mindful design. It is not a style, it is a lifestyle. More snuggly materials, layered neutrals, and textural contrasts are to be expected in 2025.
To accomplish this appearance, I have been using low profile wood beds, cotton linen curtains and handmade ceramic vases. Furniture is generally low to the ground, modular, and has natural wood grains and subdued color palettes. The setting is completed by slatted wood panels, tatami-style mats, and large woven rugs. Nothing is in vain, and nothing should be superfluous. It’s a look that invites both clarity and calm.
I personally love the fact that this style makes me grounded. It encourages calmness and yet it is warm. I just did a Japandi-inspired reading nook with a rice-paper floor lamp, an oak armchair with wool cushions, and a floating shelf system- it became the clients favorite room in the house. Architectural Digest describes Japandi as the ultimate minimalist comfort zone, and I can not disagree.
The only thing I would change is to incorporate more rounded corners and smoother lines into the furniture, which will help to mellow out the austerity of classic Japandi and make it more accessible to family living.
Vintage Modern Fusion Spaces
This year we are going to be more vintage modern fusion than ever before. I am excited by the way the designers are currently combining the retro look with the smooth modern lines. Consider: an Eames lounge chair and a travertine console, or a tufted velvet sofa in a room with polished cement floors. The contrast between old and new makes the visual interest unbelievable, and it enables the really personal storytelling with the help of design.
When I do this style, I begin with a blank slate- white walls or soft gray- and add vintage statement pieces: an antique mirror, a 70s chrome lamp, or a mid-century teak credenza. Then I add to those more contemporary items such as a sculptural light or a clean-lined sectional. The outcome is a room that appears to be curated, rooted, and lived-in but not outdated.
I have dressed a living room with a 1960s walnut sideboard beneath a wall-mounted smart TV and the combination surprisingly worked. Veranda Magazine notes that “2025 is the year of design layering,” and this fusion is a great example of that principle in action. The trick is moderation- select vintage pieces that you identify with and allow them to breathe with the contemporary.
To take this idea one step further, I would love to see more upcycled or reimagined vintage items- such as a bar cart made out of an old suitcase or a re-purposed church bench as a seat in the entryway. It is all about preserving the past in the contemporary setting.
2025 Decor Goals: Personalized And Purposeful
I predict that in 2025 there will be a significant shift in the direction of purpose-driven and personalized decor. The one-size-fits-all showrooms are long gone. People are now shaping interiors that they live in. It can be taking pride in the display of collections, including family heirlooms, or making rooms based on hobbies, but the trend is all about utility and identity. I think it is the most thrilling turn interior design has made in years.
This can only be done best by meaningful customization. I usually suggest built-in shelves to show off favorite books or art, custom upholstered furniture in the clients favorite fabric, or gallery walls of personal photos and vintage treasures. A reading nook that is based on the fact that one loves poetry gives the place a soul. Storage furniture, multi-purpose furniture, and customized furniture are needed here.
The most recent project that I enjoyed was a craft room of a family that enjoys painting and embroidering. It had storage on the walls, layered lighting, and a big communal table. It was not Pinterest-perfect but it was perfect to them. Home is not so much about impressing as it is about expressing, as Domino magazine says, and I fully concur.
To extend this trend even further, I would recommend incorporating smart-home functionality such as concealed charging points, furniture with built in speakers or lighting that changes according to the time of day. It is a matter of combining sentiment and utility.
